VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. — Authorities confirmed Tuesday that the man killed by a shark at Surf Beach near Vandenberg Air Force Base was surfing with friends at the time.

A group of four surfers was in the water when one saw another being attacked by a shark, Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department officials said.

As one surfer swam to rescue the victim and pulled him ashore, another called 911, said Sgt. Mark Williams. The call came in at 10:58 a.m., he said.

Vandenberg fire rescue personnel were the first responders, initially attempting CPR but later pronouncing the man dead on the beach, Williams said.

Vandenberg officials said the man was 38 years old but declined to provide further details until his family is notified.
